The structure and transition of the warm-pool tongue in the El Ninos of 1986-87 and 1991-92 are shown in detail, and a well-reproduced result is obtained from a simulation using an ocean general circulation model forced by the ECMWF wind stress. The warm pool can be regarded as having a higher-temperature and lower-saline water and its eastern edge behaves as a strong salinity front. The evolution equations for the warm-pool tongue are derived, which assume a one-layer reduced-gravity model and include a wind stress forcing term. Analyses of simulation and modeling results indicate that not only westerly wind anomalies with interannual variability but also westerly winds with intraseasonal variability play an important role in the onset and development of the 1986-87 and 1991-92 El Ninos. When a westerly wind blows over the warm pool, its width narrows and its eastern edge deepens due to a convergent Ekman drift\n the heat content in the warm pool converges toward the equator. Simultaneously eastward currents are induced by the westerly winds, their strength depending on the intensity and duration of the westerly winds. In the El Nino periods, the eastern edge of the warm pool, which develops interannually, is extruded eastward while the trade winds slacken interannually. Simultaneously, strong westerly winds blow intraseasonally and nonlinear Kelvin waves are newly generated. They induce the intensive eastward extrusion of the warm-pool tongue, and then large volumes of the heat content are released from the warm pool. The heat content at the equator propagates to the western coast of South America. In the developing stage of the nonlinear Kelvin waves, the eastern edge of the warm pool may break down. The El Nino simulation actually confirms the disintegration of the warm-pool tongue during the 1986-87 and 1991-92 El Ninos.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_10001_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"American Meteorological Society","subitem_publisher_language":"en"}]},"item_10001_relation_14":{"attribute_name":"DOI","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_relation_type_id":{"subitem_relation_type_id_text":"10.1175/1520-0485(2000)030<1582:ZMOTPW>2.0.CO;2"}}]},"item_10001_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0022-3670","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Tomonori Matsuura","creatorNameLang":"en"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Satoshi Iizuka","creatorNameLang":"en"}]}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_title":"Zonal migration of the Pacific warm-pool tongue during El Nino events","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Zonal migration of the Pacific warm-pool tongue during El Nino events","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"40001","owner":"1","path":["1670839190650"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2023-03-30"},"publish_date":"2023-03-30","publish_status":"0","recid":"4956","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Zonal migration of the Pacific warm-pool tongue during El Nino events"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-08T06:13:20.362323+00:00"}
