マスコミ等で「ゲリラ豪雨」とも呼ばれる局地的大雨は,河川の急な増水や道路の浸水などを通じて時には人的被害をも引き起こすため,そのメカニズム解明と予測技術の開発・高度化は重要な研究課題である.本稿では局地的大雨について,その実態とメカニズムについて現在の知見を紹介し,その予測技術について解説した.実態とメカニズムについては,局地的大雨を引き起こす積乱雲について,その構造と発生条件を解説し,局地的大雨が起こるプロセスを考察した.予測に関しては,一時間程度の非常に短い予測時間に対し,積乱雲に伴う強雨の時間発展を予測する技術に焦点を当て,補外ベースのナウキャストとデータ同化を用いた数値予測について解説した.最後に局地的大雨研究の今後の展望を述べた.
