Machiya are typical traditional wooden houses, and efforts are being made to preserve them along with the townscape. In a seismic survey study based on a detailed structural survey of machiya conducted jointly with Kyoto City from 2003, many problems were pointed out with the seismic resistance of machiya. With the above in mind, E-Defense shaking experiments were performed for the aim to develop a method of seismic reinforcement and seismic design that was suitable for machiya. Two houses were tested simultaneously: a house that had been moved from Kyoto and a newly built house with the same framework as the relocated house.
