A full-scale circular pier with a diameter of 1.8 m and a height of 7.5 m was constructed as the test specimen. The input seismic motion on the shaking table was the same as that observed at JR Takatori Station during the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake. As a result, the lap-joints of the stirrups came loose, completely losing their restraining effect on the core concrete.
