Research to clarify the damage caused by long-duration, long-period seismic motion and to develop mitigation technology for such damage, is considered to be an important issue, as is research and development for near-field earthquakes. The National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) is engaged in research and development using the E-Defense facility, and in order to promote research and development into long-period, long-duration seismic motion that occurs when a major subduction earthquake occurs, facilities have been upgraded to increase the long-period, long-duration capabilities of E-Defense.
