A snow pit observation showed a detailed structure of the new snow layer, which had formed nearly half a day before the avalanche occurred. The existence of a weak layer within the new snow layer was confirmed by a hand test, and the shear strength of the weak layer was measured using a shear frame. Moreover, the snow cover structure and snow stability were simulated using a numerical model of the snow cover (SNOWPACK).
